Analysis Of A Farewell To ArmsBy Ernest Hemingway

Whoever said, War was hell, must have read Ernest Hemingway s A Farewell to Arms. It is a decade defining controversial piece of American Literature. It was not only controversial because Hemingway was a depressed drunkard, but it was controversial because it doesn t glorify war; it shows the brunt reality of the Great War. He provides the evidence of his depression through his writings by allowing his characters to be placed in horrid situations. He also shows his alcoholism this way, by allowing his characters to be alcoholics. For example, in A Farewell to Arms, Frederic Henry used alcohol to get over his pain, which would eventually lead to Henry s jaundice, a lack of liver function, which is a symptom of cirrhosis of the liver,†¦show more content†¦During the second book in the novel, Catherine and Frederic are talking about being married legally through the church. Catherine responds to Frederic stating how he would go on leave to be formally married by saying, You can t get to Scotland and back on a leave. Besides I won t leave you. What good would it do to marry now? We re really married. I couldn t be any more married, (Hemingway 99). This quote shows the sanctity of their relationship because it s just like a marriage. They are so close together, and since they re always together, they are like an old married couple. Rinaldi, a surgeon friend of Frederic, has been caught in the chaos of a front, and he has to do all the major cases in the hospital he works at. He shows how horrid the front is, and how hellish war is by saying, I never think. No, by God, I don t think; I operate, (Hemingway 147). This shows how Rinaldi is what s called a hamburger surgeon. These surgeons just patch up, and they take out what they need to take out. Many of them don t even think, nor do they have bedside manners, they just operate. Around two-thirds into the book, Frederic is captured by his allies, and he is about to be put on trial before a biased judge, who was also the executioner, and right before he was up for trial, Frederic prepared for his escape. Circadian Biology The Complexities Of Keeping Time

The seminar that I attended was hosted by the biology department, with was Jennifer Hurley presenting from the Renesslaer Polytechnic Institute. The topic of the seminar was Circadian Biology: The complexities of keeping time. In this seminar, she went into depth about circadian rhythms and why they are important. Jennifer has done many experiments in regards circadian rhythms to learn more about them. One experiment she conducted consisted of the plant Daphnia. Jennifer and her research team discovered that the Daphnia has a molecular circadian rhythm. This illustrated that humans are not the only one with a molecular clock, but humans have the most advanced circadian clock currently known. Circadian rhythms are only one biological rhythm that the body undergoes. Some examples consist of ultradian rhythms which take less than 24 hours to complete, infrardian rhythms that take more than 24 hours to complete and then there’s circadian rhythms which is done at an estimation of 2 4 hours. Circadian rhythms are our biological way of keeping track of time. It was defined in the presentation as a daily repeating process with a period of 24 hours. There are certain criteria that are needed to establish what a rhythm is. Rhythms persist in the absence of external cues. In essence, this means that because of these rhythms, people are able to anticipate certain events that can occur. WHY WE PROCRASTINATE WHEN WE HAVE AN APPROACHING WRITING DEADLINE Have you ever had a deadline you needed to meet, but found yourself doing anything and everything, except for what you are supposed to be doing? You know you should be writing that final chapter of your book that is due in a few days, but instead you are making yourself busy by cleaning out your closets. Yep! Procrastination. We are all guilty of it at some point(s) in our lives. But, why do we procrastinate? Is it because we are lazy? Is it due to poor time management skills? According to this great article from The New York Times, neither of those things are to blame. Believe it or not, procrastination actually stems from the negative feelings that we have in regards to certain tasks. We know that we are avoiding writing that final chapter, and are fully aware of the consequences of not making our deadlines. Yet, we do it anyway. Yes, in essence, by procrastinating we are self-sabotaging. So, why do we keep doing it? It turns out that procrastination is generally the result of our inability to properly manage our negative feelings. If you are feeling stressed about finishing your book, and nervous about the next steps in the publishing process, your brain can easily convince itself that putting your book aside and rearranging the furniture instead is a good idea. Our procrastination does not serve us well, though, because it only causes more stress and anxiety when we have to return to the task at hand. And those added negative feelings only make us want to procrastinate even further. While it all sounds like a vicious, never-ending cycle, there is a way out. According to the NYT article, the answer lies in re-programing our brains to identify the negative feelings that we are having in response to a certain task. Once we acknowledge those negative feelings, we must practice self-compassion to get to the bottom of why we are feeling that way. Only then can we forgive our negative feelings and focus on the positive outcomes to come, once we finish our tasks.

Archeologist does not excavate field sites randomly to collect artifacts instead it is done through "systematically for a specific purpose." It examines such diverse topics as the relationship between language and brain function, how language changes change, links between language and human behavior." In the current scenario, Paul Bowers is the CEO; and all other members remained in their previous position. The company had two plants which had its own operational man ger. The functional specialist normally favoured either one plant over another. There was a friendly rivalry among the two plants. Kim has realised that the friendly banter that existed between the two sites had become barbed and relationship had got less friendly. By May 2010 the company had 1750 employees working for Spice-Trail. Kim had taken into consideration the major incident which occurred in the company within the past few months and among them four incident that took place has majorly affected the company and its employees. Joel Barker team were not satisfied with the pay r eview. Following the decision many of Joel team members began to stay away from work and during the month July and August, the absentee’s record increased. This situation was made worse when two of Joel core member resigned. To handle this problem, Mo Travis was elected as the spokesperson and explained that the employees felt that they were let down by the management. When compared it was found out that the staff received 0.5%less than relish plant, they were offered more training and so on.
